Some Common Habits that Damage Your Brain
Introduction
There are a range of lifestyle habits that can impact your brain negatively.
Habits (7)
i) Missing meals (especially breakfast as it can result in low blood sugar levels that is very dangerous for the brain.
"... The brain uses more energy than other organs in the body and regularly denying the brain enough nourishment causes the deficit in that energy budget, causing the brain to become less responsive to stimuli..."
Julian Hudson, 2023)
ii) Chronic stress (stress can be good for the body as it prepares the body for flight or fight in the face of danger; however, chronic stress builds up the hormone (cortisol) and this can cause lasting damage, ie kills brain cells and causes the brain to shrink.)
iii) Sleep deprivation (insufficient sleep has a negative impact on the function of your neurons; dulls your senses and reflects; chronic sleep deprivation makes these effects permanent, ie dulls your performance)
iv) Dehydration (as the body is made up of 70%, water it is critical for every body function, including the brain
"...The effect of dehydration on your brain happens really quickly too, with researchers determining that even just two hours of heavy exercise without water can cause cognitive decline..."
Julian Hudson, 2023
Dehydration impacts functions like complex problem-solving, coordination and attention.)
v) Overeating (it is suspected that obesity occurs when the food we eat lacks nutrition; this leads to the desired to overeat in order to meet the bodies needs for vitamin, minerals, etc; so even if you eat a lot, you could still be starving your brain.)
vi) Too much sugar (this can cause a state of chronic inflammation.
"...This impacts the ability of the body to absorb important nutrients from food and begins to starve the brain for what it needs for optimal cognition..."
Julian Hudson, 2023)
viii) Smoking (smoking has many negative effects of your body, including the brain, ie cell membranes and part of the brain that control balance, coordination, and both fine and gross motor skills plus it thins the cortex which processes include language, memory, perception, etc)
