Framework 131 Types of Business Transformation (4)
Introduction
"...Business transformations vary in terms of context, place, and place of initiation..."
Carsten Lund Pedersen et al, 2022
This framework looks at all types of business transformation based on 2 dimensions
i) Is your transformation driven by internal need or external needs?
ii) Does your transformation need to happen quickly or do you need more time to do it?
The diagram below shows the 4 types transformation
Explaining the 4 types
i) Slow-motion (slow and internally initiated; usually with a long implementation time like cultural changes, corporate turnarounds, etc; managerial challenges include keeping people focused on the direction and outcomes.
"...This requires a long-term view and patience, as well as a spirit of continuous learning and improvement throughout the transformation process..."
Carsten Lund Pedersen et al, 2022)
ii) Sprinted (fast and internally initiated; characterised by an urgent challenge to the status quo like sudden corporate restructuring, introducing a new strategic direction, etc; managerial challenges include
"...To build a powerful narrative to create the needed energy and motivation to change. Without a motivated workforce, it will be impossible to follow through on the desired direction..."
Carsten Lund Pedersen et al, 2022)
iii) negotiated transformation (slow and externally initiated like future regulatory changes; challenges include
"...to engage in debates, to exercise influence, skilfully prepare the organisation for transformation..."
Carsten Lund Pedersen et al, 2022
iv) hijacked transformation (fast and externally initiated like war (imposing of sanctions, etc), new disruptive technology (streaming threats conventional TV, cinemas, and movie industries; some of the challenges revolve around the need to move quickly.)
Managing the multi-transformational situation by
i) spotting the need to transform ( organisations able to identify and diagnose the kind transformations they are facing; do this on a regular basis)
ii) develop the appropriate process for each transformation (understand that what works for one transformation will not necessarily work for another)
iii) understanding interconnections between transformations (be careful as
"...Transformations are inherently complex and they vary - but they are typically seen as just being one thing..."
