Resilience Shield

Introduction

Resilience is a dynamic, multifaceted skill that can be measured, understood and developed.

A basis definition of resilience is the ability to withstand stressors and deliver outcomes that surpass expectations.

Resilience can be further explained as a Multi-Layered Shield framework we carry with us, where each layer represents an area of life that contributes to overall resilience:

  • Innate Layer: our baseline resilience such as personality traits and genetic predispositions
  • Mind Layer: psychological well-being, mindset and mental strategies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT or mindfulness
  • Body Layer: physical health, including sleep, nutrition and fitness
  • Social Layer: relationships, community and social support networks
  • Professional Layer: purpose, career satisfaction and meaningful work
  • Adaptation Layer: capacity for learning, growth and responding effectively to change

Insights & Approach

  • Self-awareness is foundational: assessing our strengths and weaknesses across all layers before pursuing growth
  • Actionable strategies per layer: from mindfulness and reframing of negative thoughts, to prioritizing rest, building connections, setting career goals and embracing continuous learning
  • Purpose as a resilience driver: cultivating meaning and values anchors resilience through adversity
  • Resilience is a lifelong process: resilience evolves over time; we need to continually refine your shield as life changes
