Technique 4.11 — Facilitate a Conversation Around Clashing Values

Introduction

A worksheet template to help individuals or groups navigate value clashes productively. It can be used in team meetings, coaching sessions, workshops or personal reflection.

Managing a Values Clash – Conversation Worksheet

  1. Describe the situation

Clearly and objectively describe the situation where the value clash is occurring.

What happened? What triggered a concern?

  1. Identify the core values at play

Try to identify the values involved for both sides (e.g., respect, loyalty, fairness, innovation, tradition, etc).

My/Our values Involved:

Their values (as I understand them):

  1. Reflect on the meaning behind the values

What do these values mean to you? How do you express them?

What does this value mean to me?

What might it mean to them?

  1. Check your assumptions

Use the Ladder of Inference or simply reflect.

(for more detail, see elsewhere in the knowledge base)

What assumptions am I making about the other person/group?

What evidence do I have for these assumptions?

  1. Find common ground

Look for shared goals, values or desired outcomes.

What do we both care about?

Is there a higher value or purpose we agree on?

  1. Co-Design next steps

Focus on respectful action and future behaviour.

What’s a respectful way forward that honours both perspectives?

What agreements or boundaries need to be clarified?

  1. Commit to follow-Up

Ensure accountability and check back in.

Who will do what and by when?

When will we review how things are going?
