Another Way to Look at Leadership
Great leaders are Confident, Connected, Committed and Courageous (4Cs)
Great leaders
"...Confident in themselves, connected to others, committed to purpose and emotionally courageous..."
Peter Bregman, 2018
They are willing to make hard decisions, have the hard conversations, inspire action, create accountability, get the most important work done first, etc; committed to a larger purpose; are good communicators, ie persuasive speakers; care about other people; are hard-working
Only a few people excel at the 4Cs simultaneously.
What happens if a leader is lacking one of the 4 Cs
"...If you're confident in yourself but disconnected from others, everything will be about you and you will alienate the people around you. If you're connected to others but lack confidence in yourself, you will betray your own needs and perspectives in order to please everyone else. If you're not committed to a purpose, something bigger than yourself and others, you'll flounder, losing the respect of those around you as you act aimlessly. And if you fail to act powerfully, decisively and boldly - with emotional courage - your ideas will remain idle thoughts and your goals remain unfulfilled fantasies..."
Peter Bregman, 2018
Some extra Cs
- communications (authentic; understandable, etc)
- curiosity (includes imagination, creativity and innovation, etc)
- caring (empathy for other people, etc)
- challenging (not satisfied with status quo; calculated risk-taking, etc)
- continuous improvement (always looking for better ways to do things, etc)
