A Traditional Approach To Intelligence
The Western world looks at intelligence as gained through technology. For example, meteorologists use satellites, pressure gauges, wind charts, etc. This is all just data.
"...true intelligence comes from an ability to assess the data and make a reasonable determination..."
Joel Reid, 2022
NB Data is not information; information is not knowledge; knowledge is not understanding; understanding is not wisdom!!!!
Intelligence is not about knowledge gained through complex technology.
The Western world tends to underrate intelligence gained through tens of thousands of years of observation and data collection by Indigenous people.
Some examples
- tsunami in Indonesia (2004). There was a coastal-based tribal group in an isolated area of Indonesia; it had no formal tsunami alarm system. It took a couple of days after the tsunami for the authorities to reach the area and they were expecting the worst. However, there were no casualties among the locals. It was understood in their tribal lore, based on historical evidence, that if certain events (like animals becoming agitated, etc) happened, people should move to higher ground. They had done this and were all safe. Yet elsewhere in Indonesia 100,000s lost their lives.
- Australian Army 'living off the land'. The army used the Australian Indigenous people to teach their soldiers how to live exclusively on available local native flora and fauna in northern Australia
- predicting a cyclone in Australia. The meteorologists predicted that the 'low' would pass by without any problem. Yet signs to the Indigenous people stated otherwise, ie
"...The wind has changed to go in the opposite direction, the clouds had moved north instead of south, and the corellas (a small cockatoo) had all left town and gone to shelter in Karijini (local mountain range)..."
Joel Reid, 2022
Soon afterwards, a cyclone hit!!!!
